Is oxytocin an undeservedly forgotten hormone in men?

چکیده

Oxytocin is one of the most ancient mammalian hormones in terms phylogeny. Over more than 100-year history his scientific study, views on biological functions oxytocin humans have undergone a significant and even revolutionary changes. For long time, this neurohypophysis hormone, which formed hypothalamus only deposited it (central synthesis), was associated exclusively with female reproduction aspect labor, breastfeeding maternal behavior. However, over past decades, unique extensive base has been created confirming universal nature effects both sexes, predetermined by presence additional peripheral sites secretion men women, as well an receptor apparatus many cells tissues, together allows to function endocrine central auto- paracrine local signaling pathways. This fact convincingly proves that much wider range physiological body results modern research allow us consider neuropeptide multifunctional hormone great social significance for humans. The review article briefly discusses endocrinology detail its men, including role sexual behavior, erectile function, protection from stress, reproduction, metabolism, prostate gland.

Progesterone: the forgotten hormone in men?

'Classical' genomic progesterone receptors appear relatively late in phylogenesis, i.e. it is only in birds and mammals that they are detectable. In the different species, they mediate manifold effects regarding the differentiation of target organ functions, mainly in the reproductive system. Surprisingly, we know little about the physiology, endocrinology, and pharmacology of progesterone and ...

Oxytocin is an anabolic bone hormone.

We report that oxytocin (OT), a primitive neurohypophyseal hormone, hitherto thought solely to modulate lactation and social bonding, is a direct regulator of bone mass. Deletion of OT or the OT receptor (Oxtr) in male or female mice causes osteoporosis resulting from reduced bone formation. Consistent with low bone formation, OT stimulates the differentiation of osteoblasts to a mineralizing p...

Oxytocin is a cardiovascular hormone.

Oxytocin (OT), a nonapeptide, was the first hormone to have its biological activities established and chemical structure determined. It was believed that OT is released from hypothalamic nerve terminals of the posterior hypophysis into the circulation where it stimulates uterine contractions during parturition, and milk ejection during lactation. However, equivalent concentrations of OT were fo...

Forgotten Men

This is a most worth-while volume, that should be read by social workers in particular and humanitarians in general. Within small bulk, it lays bare, without offence to those who are labouring now in this field, the great need of the inhabitants of Common Lodging Houses, to be understood in the first place, and to be given the help they so sorely need, in the second. The survey is well planned,...

Oxytocin is an age-specific circulating hormone that is necessary for muscle maintenance and regeneration

The regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle declines with age. Previous studies suggest that this process can be reversed by exposure to young circulation; however, systemic age-specific factors responsible for this phenomenon are largely unknown. Here we report that oxytocin--a hormone best known for its role in lactation, parturition and social behaviours--is required for proper muscle tissu...
